Our long lost mates Hillary and Maiki arrived in Floripa today. We hadn't seen Maiki since Kona last year (we saw Hillary in Malaysia) so when they arrived around lunch time of course we hit the coffee shop to catch up. Maiki just destroyed the field on the bike in Lanzorote and despite what looks to me like either very badly bruise or broken toes managed to hold on for a third on the run. He arrived here today looking like he had been on holidays for three weeks. He even donned the bike kit and came for a ride this afternoon not to mention a run off the bike (hardcore). Hillary is backing up for her second Ironman in a week on Sunday which is even more hardcore! She is crazy ... but i love her for it!
We started the day with a journey into the city of Florianopolis for a swim at the only pool on the island with Miss Dede Griesbauer. We also got to see most of the bike course along the way which mostly consists of dual carriage way highway. There are a few solid hills in the course but generally pretty flat and fast. The run was the surprise to me. There is a section from 12-14km which is brutal with some really steep sections. We only do it once though as the second 21km is on a mostly flat loop.
Tonight it's been all about soccer. With the world cup coming up the place is going soccer mad. No doubt it's like this all the time but the Brazilian flag everything you can name is very popular at all the stores right now. If only we were here in two weeks time when the tournament begins! We stopped into a little bar on the way home from dinner to check out the soccer action on the TV. They are all very passionate about it .... it's great to watch!
