Just finished the Cancun Ironman 70.3! What a tough day. With massive squals of wind and sheets of rain coming and going all day with humid patches in between it made it one of the harder races I have done recently. I was really happy to finish 3rd in a very solid field. All looks good for my Kona preperations ... only 3 weeks away now! I will add some pix from the race shortly.
RACE REPORT
Defending champion Simon Lessing and I were the first out on the bike course, but we were eventually caught by a group that included Galindez and Australians Paul Ambrose and Richie Cunningham and American David Thompson, who had to make up a gap of almost 90 seconds after the swim to join the lead. Frustrated by the group riding ahead, Chris Legh pulled out of the race during the ride.
Starting the run Thompson, Cunningham and Galindez and myself quickly pulled away, with Lessing hanging on about 100 meters behind. Thompson tried to make a break at the six-kilometer point of the run, gaining about 30 seconds and splitting up the group. A few kilometers later, though, Galindez made his move. Thompson tried to stay with the Argentine (who lives in Brazil) but couldn’t hang on. Thompson would hang on for second and myself coming across the line in third. Cunningham “blew up” during the last quarter of the run (possibly the result of a heavy race schedule) and couldn’t hold off Lessing, who placed fifth.
